Fishing Report 1-1-2012 Tomoka Basin/River Ormond

For Information on my guided kayak fishing trips, please visit www.FishTomoka.com

Brought in the new year with a bang! Launched at 6am and immediately started to hunt trout for the season opener. The fog was so thick you could barely see the front of your boat from the outboard. Here's a shot after it cleared a bit.

Fished the nooks and crannies in the river and got 3 nice fish up to about 20" fairly quickly on jigs and topwater. Started throwing the 16-17" fish back in hopes of the big one, never got herbut did land about 12 in all. Had a few massive topwater strikes, one being a very large Snook that trailed my lure (dorsal fin out of the water) for about 3 seconds before finally taking it. Unfortunately I only got to hang on for one speedy run and the hook came dislodged. I decided after a little over an hour of fishing that it was time to search out a red. Luckily I spotted Johnny Law before he spotted me, no ticket today!
I came across a few other fisherman I couldnt help but admire for a few minutes before continuing on.

Puttered along for about 20 minutes to get to the spot and what a scene did I encounter. When first arriving I noticed those little bubbles all over the surface that come from either mullet jumping, boats running through, or fish eating, you know the bubbles. I sat back and pealed a banana and just watched. The first thing I noticed was the massive school of finger mullet hugging the shoreline. Halfway through my banana I found out where the bubbles were coming from! Big ol reds schooled up thick having a hay day on the mullet. The second cast of my topwater enticed a solid 25"er that put up a real nice fight.

After landing that fish, the school got weary of my topwater, with only the occasional pop or half hearted "tester hit". Instead of digging around my box I decided to troll down the bank a couple few yards and net up a some mullet. Came back to feeding fish again, the live mullet wouldnt last longer then 2-3 minutes before a red would slurp it up. Caught a few more and decided to leave them alone. What a great way to bring in the new year! The fishing has been top notch in Ormond lately, it will be interesting to see what this cold snap does. I know where ill be tomorrow morning :o)

Here's a nice Red from a few weeks ago. Sorry the background is hidden, a friend requested I do it for him as a favor.
