Fishing Report 8-01-10

From near to far, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.

There is no doubt that the fishing season has been a bit crazy this year. We have had some extreme weather in both the hot and cold climates. Some blame Global warming, some say its just coincidence, nobody knows for sure. I do know this, I can not remember the last time I have seen so much bait in the water. I know for a fact that I have never seen such a bountiful shrimp run, which by the way, is still going strong! If you have a boat you can throw a net from, go throw it in the channel under the Granada Bridge! Just remember, its illegal to anchor in the channel. Shrimping is hard work and not for everyone. If your in need of live bait shrimp and you see some guys out there, they are usually more then happy to throw you 50 for next to nothin.

The fishing has been hard to predict at times but for the most part has been decent. The Redfish bite has been on in the Basin lately. Live mullet has been the bait for us. Free-lined or fish finder rigs are the way to rig. Look for them pushing wakes along the shoreline or on or along shallow bars right now. If your a constant mover, you may want to slow down a little and anchor up for a while. Get a couple rods in the water to increase your chances.

Here are a couple 19.5 inchers from a recent trip

Trout have also been very active along all your favorite ambush points. Look for them early off the tips of islands with good water flow. Always try to cast up current and let your bait drift back down past the spot of interest. Light colored jigs have been good but a live shrimp on a popping cork is almost a guaranteed hook up.

Tarpon are in good numbers in the Tomoka if your willing to make the trip.

In the past week the Snook have been about the best I have seen all year. My Green Back Top Dog has been getting a lot of attention when it lands under those big overhanging tree's. I landed a really nice slot size line sider a few days ago that put up a heck of a fight!

Just for the fun of it
The SailCats down in Port Orange have been good size. I have yet to keep one but I know a lot of people who say they are great eating fish. This one will be a little more street smart next time he see's a 12" mullet on a 7/0 hook. Thats a full size cooler by the way.
